Writers' Wednesday - Read any good stories lately?

Today's topic is gen/het fiction writers.  Have you read any good fan fiction lately?  Folks want to know where to find the stories.

There are several authors whose writing I enjoy, and I've been fortunate that several writers are willing to share their wisdom on the writing craft.  Here are just a few of my favorite authors:

Cindy Walker - The St. Crispin's Day Society series is very good.  Many of the stories can be found in their own subdirectory on File 40 (listed in the links section).  A few of my favorite stories are:  "The Getting of Wisdom Affair", "The Secret of My Partner's Success", "The Angel of Death Affair", "The Sound of One Hand Clapping", "The Company You Keep", and "Spooks".   She has also written some stories with Napoleon's moving into Section I and Illya's working independently - and not as a fashion designer!  Martine and Napoleon's daughter, Allison, are wonderful characters.

A. J. Burfield - There is a link to A. J. Burfield's stories under "General" on File 40.  They have the suspense element of a good MFU episode.  Two of my favorites are "Release" and "The Under the Moon Affair".

Linda Cornett - Linda has a site under construction.  She has written several stories that I enjoy, but sadly I can't remember all the titles now.  One is "Uncovered Bridges", a sequel to "Bridges of Madison County".

Mary Catherine Marshall - I'm a big fan of Molly Cate's "Mother Superior" series.  Some stories do have violent content, and I'm too much of a wimp for those (the warnings are posted).  I think I became addicted with "The 'Through the Glass, Darkly' Affair".  Our guys encounter strong female companionships with Dr. Elizabeth Charles and Rev. Emerson Myer Cates, who often refers to the blond one as "cossack".  The first portion of the "Mother Superior" series can be found under "New Stuff" on File 40 and the stories continue on fanfiction.net.

Rosywonder - Rosy writes suspense-filled stories (she beat me to one of my plot bunnies and, without a doubt, did a better job with it!).  "The Coalminer's Wife" is the pre-quel to the "The Font of Life" series on fanfiction.net.

Jan Beckwith - Jan's stories are listed under "General" on File 40.  I've read all her stories, but "Merebright" is one of my favorites.  The details have stayed in my memory; I felt like I was in England on assignment with Illya.  Jan also co-wrote "The Moses Affair" with Agent M. Mercedes.

Gina Martin - Gina has a number of wonderful stories, some are cross-overs with Hawaii Five-O.  My link for Gina's stories will take you directly into the MFU section.  Gina has a recently published book as well.  I will locate the direct link to the book and will add it to the Section II links this week.

Bill Koenig - Besides writing an excellent synopsis of each MFU episode, Bill has written the "Timeshift Series" featured with its own link on the File 40 homepage.  I haven't read all of the stories, but I enjoyed "Clara", the sequel to "The Terbuf Affair".  "The Land of the Living Affair" is the sequel to "Clara".

Vicky Loebel - See http://www.loebelclark.com/ (if I don't have a link, I'll add one!).  "The Early Days Affair" and "The Stone Bridge Affair" are good stories, but I love "On Target" - it's a thoroughly enjoyable quick read.

Carabele - I'm reading Carabele's stories now and have added a link to her site.

There are several very good stories on Yahoo Channel F, but finding them isn't easy.

Today is the day to promote or self-promote good gen/het fan fiction.

I completely second and third your nod to Cindy Walker's work. Several of her stories, "City of Lies Affair" and "Lion of Ngambo," have exactly the right tone to have been fourth season scripts for the show. She doesn't do SF-based stories that I've read, no Thrush earthquake machines, for example, and her stories are more serious, no David McDaniel-esque banter between the guys. But they are no less effective for that, and are well-written too.

Thanks for mentioning me in your list of gen MFU writers whose works are worth a look-see! I only started writing fanfiction this year, though I have written fantasy fiction for more years than I like to recall, some as commissioned pieces for a particular fantasy game world. As well I have written more "down-to-earth" works in play format, some of which have been produced in the realm of Manhattan off-Broadway theatrical workshops.

Thing is I started my sojourn into the world of U.N.C.L.E. fanfiction with a really big project with THE WAVES OF CHANGE AFFAIR, of which Part 1 is up and published on my site, but Part 2 is still in progress. But I think the ultimate ending of this one will both surprise and please. I really do want to finish Part 2 by the end of the year and get that up for folks to read. Hopefully I'll be able to do just that, but if not, definitely within a few weeks of that timeframe.

Already though there are so many shorter stories in my head, I am itching to move forward on writing those. So trying to keep focused on WAVES OF CHANGE has been a bit of a lesson in discipline. [chuckle] I did "break stride" at one point to write the short TRUSTING OPTIMISM and I hope folks find that enjoyable.

I hope folks find my stories a good addition to the gen/het portion of the MFU fanfiction world in which I am already a dedicated reader of the works of the authors listed in the Cat's original post.

I also have to say if you have never read THE GETTING TO KNOW YOU AFFAIR, a take on Napoleon and Illya's first mission together, do take the time to do that! It is absolutely the best MFU fanfic I have ever read. Unfortunately it is also the only fanfic the particular writer wrote for MFU.

Link for it on ff.net is here: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/419079/1/

Cat ... Thanks so much for referencing "The Mother Superior" stories! I'm honored! I'm working on another one now ... I know, it's been more than two years! Again, thanks for the post! Molly Cate

Thanks for the plug!

Just a note: Despite the URL, Clare Chew is the person who is responsible for maintaining Solovision.

THE VANISHED INTO THIN AIR AFFAIR is another very good MFU story in the gen category. Again though, its author is sadly no longer writing MFU fanfiction.

The story is definitely very mission-oriented and very much in the style of the series. I really like that it doesn't sentimentalize the relationship between Napoleon and Illya while still showing that friendship as strong and true.
